Several companies contributed to the development of 5G At the top of the list Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia followed by Samsung, Qualcomm and ZTE and other companies.
What is 5G and what does it Mean in your Phone:
The Fifth Generation Called 5G NR (New Radio) is a new Radio Access Technology (RAT) works in two modes: NSA and SA this is the latest Generation of Mobile Networks, arrived after the 4G In April 2019 South Korea a first country to adopt 5G on a large scale.
What's The New With 5G?
1G was used for voice, 2G enabled SMS, 3G enabled mobile web and apps, then 4G enabled voice over 4G (VoLTE) and increase the throughput connections .
The 5G came to provide the Internet with fantastic speeds of up to 10-20 Gbit/s ! ,And a very large response speed (latency), which opened the way for new uses that were not familiar to man before.
What are The Applications of 5G in your Phone?
- Play youtube videos in 4K without download delay.
- Share lives in (youtube, Facebook, Instagram and other social networks) without Video Cutting.
- Use several Applications connected to your smartphone at the same time.
- 5G allows new applications to Simulate Reality.
- Watch live broadcast of events , like matches without latency as if you were living in the moment in the stadium!.

How the 5G Network Works ?
The 5G Network Works in Two Modes and Two Types of Frequency , We will explain everything in a short and simple way.5G divides into two Modes SA and NSA:
- 1) NSA ( Non-Standalone): Relies on an existing 4G LTE network (low in cost and their deployment is faster than SA (Standalone ), also the time to market is lower, as 4G locations can be used to install 5G radio.
- 2) SA (Standalone): Providing 5G service that requires building 5G base stations and the back-end 5G core Network to deliver a superfast network with ultra-low latency for advanced 5G use cases.
5G Divided into two Frequency Bands :
- 5G Sub-6: using the frequency bands below 6 GHz also called FR1 (Frequency Range 1) , like (n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n20, n25, n28, n29, n30, n38, n40, n41, n48, n66, n71, n77, n78, n79) used by iphone 13, ( 5G Sub-6 characterized by consistency and coverage, can penetrate solid objects like buildings better than mmWave and their coverage moves farther than mmWave).
- 5G mmWave: corresponding to the 5G above 26 GHz also known as 5G Ultra Wideband running on FR2 (Frequency Range 2) for exemple iphone 13 working on Bands "n258, n260, n261" (able to handle a larger number of connections without significant drop in speed!, but with a shorter range and cannot penetrate buildings and other objects like 5G Sub-6 do that making it better suited for dense urban areas or specific target locations such as stadiums, airports, concerts...etc).
5G in Smartphones:
We will discuss in this part about everything related to 5G in mobile phones.Who Created the First 5G Mobile Phone Modem?
Qualcomm embarked on a race with other competing companies and produced The first 5G modem (Snapdragon X50 5G Modem-RF) for Smartphones , used with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855/860 chips but with an external design (not inside Soc 855/860) need to be paired 4G LTE modem to provide multi-mode capabilities .
It didn't take long time for Samsung until join the race to produce its first 5G modem Exynos 5100 (offers 5G and 4G LTE in one chip) where he surpassed his competitor Snapdragon X50 in performance, then follow them Huawei with Balong 5000 5G Modem and Mediatek with Helio M70 5G Modem, all these modems called first 5G generation.
Which chipmakers who put 5G technology for phone?
It is currently only four chipmakers that dominate the 5G chipset market Qualcomm,Samsung,Mediatek And Huawei while Apple still uses Qualcomm modems in there Socs , as for A14 bionic (iphone 12 series) have integrated the Snapdragon X55 modem for the 5G and X60 for A15 bionic (iphone 13 series).
Apple Bionic A17 Pro is equipped with a discrete 5G modem, likely Qualcomm's Snapdragon X70 5G modem the same used in qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
if Huawei is one of the 5G leaders so Why Huawei P50 Pro has no 5G?!
Huawei after the latest US sanctions banned any company that uses US-source software or component in their manufacturing process from stopping supplying chips to Huawei Especially the companies that manufacture the KIRIN processor (TSMC,Samsung foundry) and other companies that supply RF chips ( filtre RF..etc), led by the American companies (Broadcom, skyworks, Qorvo), which made the company lose the 5G bet after it was a pioneer in this field This is embodied by the release of latest Huawei flagship smartphone the P50 without 5G with two version ( kirin 9000,snapdragon 888) but only 4G! because there is no RF chip which allows 5G operation in the KIRIN 9000 which already has a 5G modem! and the out of stock of kirin 9000 (TSMC stop their manufacture) obliged Huawei to go to external Soc the Snapdragon 888(and other side until to do their Marketing it in usa like samsung do).
Where is the 5G modem in the Smartphone?
in the last generation of 5G the Modem is integrated directly into the SOC which gives better performance quality and powersaver.
- -Qualcomm snapdragon 888 integrate 5G modem X60 (for Snapdragon 898/895 will be integrated X65 5G modem).
- -Samsung After Exynos 5100 5G modem, comes next external MoDem the Exynos 5123 wich used with Soc Exynos 990 in S20 Series ,Next is Samsung's first premium mobile chipset with an integrated 5G modem exynos 2100 (used in S21 series) With a multiband solution up to 6 GHz and mmWave 5G. It can provide maximum downlink speed of up to 7.35 Gbps in mmWave or up to 3.0 Gbps in 4G.
- -Apple released their latest iPhone13 series with A15 bionic processor wich have integrated the Snapdragon X60 modem (the same modem used in snapdragon 888) that have many improvements like increasing throughput, being able to reach 7.5 Gbit /s and engraved with 5 nm process.
- - Mediatek The MediaTek Dimensity 1200 integrate a 5G modem (6nm process) and they revealed her new modem 5G the M80 that Support mmWave and Sub-6 GHz 5G Networks.
